I’ve been in jazz and swing bands every year, I think, since I started playing trombone in 1995. As such, I have a bit of an interest in them, so when I heard that the Brookdale Big Band was performing, I decided to go check ‘em out.
Not bad, but then, they’re professionals.
Oddly enough, the bass player deigned to move during my 2-second exposure.
(Incidentally, I’m submitting this for Photo Friday’s theme of “The Blues.”)

I like this one a lot – it is right up there with your best.

don’t you just hate it when they won’t cooperate? i mean, would it be so horrible to miss a couple of a bars for a nice photo? so selfish they are!
neat-o composition-o with the background. love the lighting and the motion of his hand.

i might be a bit colourblind but will you at least tint it then?
April 15, 2007 at 9:51 am
Paul- Wow! That’s high praise! And here I wasn’t crazy about the blur. Thank you very much, good sir.
rd- Also considering I was in the back row and he probably didn’t know I was taking the picture… I guess I can forgive him.
BDPH- Might be your monitor vs. my monitor, because I have no idea what you’re talking about. Are you saying I have tinted it, or I should tint it?

i was making a joke and pretending i didn’t understand what blues meant…
it was lame. it led to confusion. it thus disintegrated as a joke and became something really stupid you were obligated to respond to.

Bath DP Host: Instead of apologizing for lameness, you could have tried playing the “well you Americans just don’t appreciate British humo(u)r” card.
(Not saying it would have worked, mind you.)

JosyC: When I first saw this picture, I wasn’t sure how I felt about the blur, but I think Paul and raindog have won me over.
Since the still bits are sufficiently nonblurry (comparable to the intersection photo, I’d say), the blur of the hands and forearm imparts a nice sense of motion. Plus the color and composition are terrific—there’s even some actual blue at the top.
(Btw, very good nonblurriness for such a long exposure from the back row with no image stabilization in the camera.)
Now, I hesitate to bring this up, as it has so little effect on the overall impact of the picture, but on my monitor there is a definite horizontal demarcation between the black at the bottom and the very dark brown of the shadowy trombone player on the left edge. It doesn’t jump out at me or anything, but if I stare at the picture too long or too closely, it seems to look a little artificial in that spot.

BDPH- My apologies. It is difficult to tell the difference between your irony and seriousness, particularly in an online context. And the phrases “at least” and “then” confused me more than your joke. Sorry for being thick-headed!
John- Ah, yes, well, that line is where the “Brookdale Big Band” banner ended. The “horizontal demarcation” was much more pronounced in real life. Now that you mention it, I suppose I could blur that line a little more so it’s not so noticeable. The blue you see is mostly from some blue lights that were shining on this banner… they changed ‘em to red every couple songs for no apparent reason.
P.S. Bath DP Host is American, so NO WAY would I let him get away with that excuse.
P.P.S. I propped my foot against the seat in front of me and used my knee to stabilize the camera. The woman sitting next to me must’ve thought I was the rudest person EVER.

The blur just makes it better – as does the blue light – you’ve got a winner here.

Yes, Paul sent me over here. My first visit. I like your work on this one. Very nice photo.

Cool Shot JC!
And I just love it when Brits say “bits!”

Paul- Hey, thanks for sending oldmanlincoln over here.
Abraham Lincoln- Well, I know I can’t exactly meet the standard you’ve set with your Canon, but thank you.
Ame- I particularly like it when it’s preceded by “naughty.”
April 16, 2007 at 1:45 pm
I really dig this cool pic! Now I know what you play
April 16, 2007 at 10:22 pm
Hmm… since I was the only person to use the word “bits” prior to Ame’s comment, perhaps I’ve been mistaken for a Brit. (Though there is an instance of “bit” in Josy’s caption and another in BDPH’s first comment.)
Ame, if you meant me, I’m duly flattered, but alas the best I can offer is that I was born in Canada and lived there long enough to learn to spell with the extra u’s, as in “favourite colour”. (Which I promptly stopped doing once I started school in the U.S., because, well, I wanted to get the best grades possible.)
Josy “Discount Video” C: It figures you would go for “naughty bits”.

Zappy- Thanks! And hey, if you ever need a trombone…
John Y.- Ahh, my reputation has preceded me. Cut me some slack; I went to a college with its own school-funded erotica magazine.
