That’s where the water runs out through when the tide goes out.

Nice picture! You have reminded me of a long ago memory…
As a kid playing on the beach in Florida, I used to dig up the clams then, in the wake of the water rushing onto the shore, I’d give them a little toss and watch them burrow their way back into the sand.
Probably shouldn’t have done that…
